Larry There was no public comment addressed at this meeting. The minutes of the August 21, 2003, Workforce Development Board Meeting were approved as submitted following a motion by Tony Bosbous and support by Jill Hazel. Workforce
Development Board Members reviewed information Director Worley has received
regarding the creation of Regional Skill Alliances. The concept of Regional Skill Alliances is a new initiative
created at the State level which may affect the current Michigan
Works!/Workforce Development Board System.
As many of the key factors described for the RSAs are currently performed
by the WDB, Board members expressed their concern that the State is unaware of
the role of the WDB. It was suggested that a steering committee needs to be
created to educate State officials of the role of the Workforce Development
Board. During review of the goals
of the Regional Skills Alliances, a discussion of the current need of a skilled
workforce occurred. Director Worley
recommended that the WDB consider becoming a convener It was also noted that letters should be sent to other entities that the WDB seeks to fill the role as convener of the Regional Skill Alliance in this area. As requested at the August 21 WDB meeting, Director Worley provided an estimate of $1075 to cover transportation and promotional items for the Career Expo to be held at War Memorial Hospital on November 4. The breakdown of costs includes $200 for transportation costs for the Fall Expo. It was highlighted that approximately $875 will be used to purchase promotional items for the Expo on November 4 for the Sault Ste. Marie students and also for the Spring Expo for the students in the other school districts. Additional funds will be necessary to provide transportation in the spring. Jeff Holt moved to approve financial support of up to $1,500 to assist in the Career Expo costs. Dave Ramsay supported. Motion passed. Strategic Planning funds will be used. Several informational items were reviewed. Under new business, the renewal of the Mackinac County 1st Step Contract was discussed. The program provides small business services and counseling in Mackinac County. Michigan Works! contributed $1,500 to assist in this program last year, with renewal pending data on actual services provided. Over the 12-month period, 28 clients were served with three referrals to other counties for services. Director Worley suggested that that the WDB consider making this payment one more year with Strategic Planning funds. Jill Hazel moved to renew the Mackinac County 1st Step Contract. Dave Ramsay supported. Motion passed. The next meeting of the Workforce Development Board was scheduled to be held on Thursday, December 4 at 5:00 p.m. at the Michigan Works! Service Center in Sault Ste. Marie. As there was no old business, the meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m. following a motion by Jill Hazel and support by Tony Bosbous.
